Critical failure costs 2 PSPs and does not recharge the sword. Failure does nothing. Ordinary success reloads 5 charges for each PSP spent. Good success reloads 10 charges for each PSP spent. Amazing success fully recharges the sword for 0 PSPs. If done out of combat, the hero can choose to focus on recharging the sword and gain -1/-2/-3 step bonus on the check depending upon the results of a Battle Mind check that costs no PSPs.
Arton Xiphos was part of the staff/retinue of Ambassador Lauren Delvecchio aboard the Concord Heavy Cruiser Falada. She was leading the Concord's diplomatic mission to bring the two warring planets of Phorcys and Ino, the two Class I worlds of the Thalaassa system, to peace after roughly 100 years of war. On the day of the final signing of the peace treaty, after the peace was signed, disaster occurred when the shuttle the Ambassador was on blew up as she was returning from the conference. The evidence from the destruction pointed at Arton. Though Arton maintained his innocence, the Concord concluded that Arton was behind the assassination. His obvious unwillingness to provide details of the organization behind his role in the assassination, or to reveal on whose behalf he had committed this atrocity did not sit well with the Concord.
In a strange twist of fate, The Republican of Phorcys claimed jurisdiction for trying the crime since the explosion had occurred within their atmosphere. The Concord had no choice but to admit the Phorcyn claim, and Arton was transferred to Phorcyn authorities. The three judge Phorcyn trial returned the rulings: "Guilty," "Guilty but with mitigating circumstances," and "Dissenting." The split decision left Arton's case as "Not Proven," thus leaving him a free man, but with the whole of the Concord convinced of his guilt.
